Vengeance Has Arrived In The First Trailer For Matt Reeves' The Batman

Hello nerds!

After the super-cool Wonder Woman 1984 trailer, the hits kept coming during DC’s FanDome when we also got the trailer for director Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. And my doubts of Pattinson’s ability to be the bat are quickly fading away.

During its panel at FanDome, Reeves shared the movie picks up during Batman’s second year in action; the forthcoming Gotham P.D. series on HBO Max serving as a Year 1 origin story of sorts. Well, seeing as it’s early days for the Bat, it makes sense Selina Kyle is not yet Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot hasn’t embraced the full Penguin of himself, Jim Gordon looks to be a detective, and an early (albeit terrifying) version of The Riddler will be the film’s villain.

Reeves also revealed Pattinon’s Bat-verse does indeed exist outside of the current focal point of the DCEU where Ben Affleck is currently the Caped Crusader fighting alongside Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, and Ezra Miller’s The Flash.

As disappointing as this news of The Batman being set outside of the main DCEU is, it is quite exciting for the Multiverse as a whole. There’s a wealth of stories that could be told, and the Multiverse is the prefect vehicle to tell a lot of them and not be constrained to the limits of only having one Batman, etc. Not to mention, there’s always the possibility this movie takes place in the Gotham established in last year’s Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix (one can dream).

In any case, from the looks of the trailer, The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, and Paul Dano as The Riddler could be a gritty and insane take on the Dark Knight and his city.

WB/DC’s The Batman hits theaters on October 1, 2021.
